I am very optimistic, this will be an inspiration for other tourist villages in Indonesia to optimize our Natural Resources (SDA), Human Resources (HR), and cultural heritage

Jakarta (ANTARA) – A tourist village in Indonesia, Penglipuran, Bali, has won an award from the World Tourism Organization under the United Nations (UNWTO).

Penglipuran Tourism Village, Bali, was selected to be included in the 54 UNWTO Best Tourism Villages 2023.

The award was won by Penglipuran Tourism Village in the third edition of “Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO” which was held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

“I am very optimistic, this will be an inspiration for other tourist villages in Indonesia to optimize our Natural Resources (SDA), Human Resources (HR), and cultural heritage,” said Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno in a written statement in Jakarta, Saturday.

The Tourism Village, which is located in Bangli Regency, was successfully selected among 260 candidates and more than 60 countries registered.

In addition to Penglipuran Village, there are three other tourist villages in Indonesia that are included in the upgrade program of this initiative, namely Bilebante Village (NTB), Pela Village, East Kalimantan, and Taro Village, Bali.

Three Indonesian tourism villages are part of 20 guidance villages that are prepared to become UNWTO’s Best Tourism Villages in the next period.

The villages are listed under the UNWTO Best Tourism Villages Upgrade Programme which are villages with great potential from various parts of the world.”The best tourism village from UNWTO is an extraordinary international award in the development of Penglipuran Tourism Village. This award is not only for Penglipuran, but for Indonesian tourism in general. This achievement will also further elevate Penglipuran Tourism Village at the international level. In addition, this award is one of our motivations, the Penglipuran community, to continue to maintain and preserve traditions and culture so that tourism in Penglipuran tourism village can be sustainable,” said Kelihsn Customary of Penglipuran Tourism Village I Wayan Budiarta.

It is known that the nomination of tourist villages is carried out by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy through a strict selection process from the winners of the Indonesian Tourism Village Award (ADWI) and intensive assistance to ensure that the tourist villages do indeed deserve the international award. The results were then recommended to UNWTO.”This award will increase the confidence of the Penglipuran Tourism Village which received international awards and can be an example for other tourism villages to participate in world-level selection to advance the tourism sector and creative economy in Indonesia,” said Giri.

The Best Tourism Village was held to capture pilot villages that have succeeded in developing tourism, by empowering the local community, and preserving local traditions and heritage.Meanwhile, the upgrade program is a program to provide support from UNWTO and partners to tourism villages that almost meet the criteria as Best Tourism Villages, but it is still lacking in several aspects of assessment.

Based on data, until 2023, as many as 190 villages have become members of the Best Tourism Village Network which is expected to become the largest global village network.

The success of Nglanggeran Village in 2021 and Penglipuran Village in 2023 which received an award as Best Tourism Villages is an international recognition of the quality of tourism villages in Indonesia.
