Penglipuran Village was established in the 14th century, during the Bangli Kingdom. This refers to the research that shows that Penglipuran Traditional Village existed since the time of the Bangli Kingdom around 700 years ago.
Penglipuran comes from the word pengeling or eling which means remember or remembering and the word pura which means place, fort or ancestor’s land, into the word penglipuran which means “remembering the ancestral land or place of origin”. So it means that Penglipuran people build temples like in Bayung Gede village to remember those in Bayung Gede village and to remember their ancestral temples.
Penglipuran comes from the words pelipur and lara which when combined can mean that Penglipuran is a place to comfort in times of sorrow (lara). It’s said that, during the kingdom era, the King of Bangli often went to this place to entertain himself or calm his mind, where the people were often got the task of comforting the King when he faced problems. This is where it’s believed the name Penglipuran comes from.
